![]() I like adding 11x11 square rooms at the cardinal points of the 15x15 circle if I need more room. At the same time, it controls the new player's urge to DIG ALL THE TILES and end up with nothing built and lots of little half-dug rooms. It will seem oddly prescriptive, but this is a sizable interior space for most industries, lends itself well to tall "underground skyscraper" mental pictures, and can easily be expanded if you need more room (like for tree farms, pastures and farm plots) in a particular layer. You can move your seeds, animals and food inside, and then seal up, in case of attack.įor actual layout of the fortress proper, I recommend a vertically orientated cylinder, 15 units in diameter, centered on a 3x3 staircase. Once you can totally sever yourself from surface attack, everything else gets the pressure turned down. As soon as you have an entrance tunnel and you're starting on the fortress proper, you should construct The Great Seal. The Great Seal is the bridge (raising) that will seal your fortress from the outside world. The most important thing for a beginner to do, IMO, is build The Great Seal. With hills or mountains, you tunnel into teh side, and lo, you've done the same thing. On a plain, you dig a ramp down, and then dig a long hallway underground, and you've duplicated the "tunnel into the mountain" concept, without the mountain. In truth, there is no significant practical difference between a mountain and a plain with respect to a fortress, if you're planning it right. ![]() ![]() Kitfox Discord #modding-discussion channelīronzemurder and Oilfurnace (illustrated) A three step guide:ĭownload DF Classic or install the premium version from Steam or Itch.ioįollow the quickstart guide on the wiki, or see other learning resources (below)Īsk any questions in the ☼Bi-weekly DF Questions Thread☼ - it's always active See the reasons for our rules here, and please report any problems!ĭF can be intimidating, but we're dedicated to helping new players.
